Last night, courtesy of Mahalo, TechCrunch and MySpace, I was lucky enough to go to an IMAX screening of The Dark Knight.
And what I have to say about that is this: WOW. Super double-delicious wow with a whammy bar on it.
Warning: Spoilers ahead, so turn ye back now if you don't want to know nuthin' more.
First: The duality of the Joker and Batman as two sides of the same coin was the psychological brilliance that made this movie tick. One image in the film summed this up: the Joker maims one of his victims to look like himself and then dresses him up in a Batman costume -- thus giving us the Joker's ruby-red mouth and white face-painted jaw visible beneath the Dark Knight's cowl. The Joker inside Batman -- visual poetry!
Heath Ledger was nothing short of stunning. His Joker-as-Lechter was truly scary -- the way Vader scared me when I was a kid. The Joker is Loki, a force of chaos, with no goal of money or even the death of Batman, whom he correctly surmises is necessary to his own existence (a point that eludes Batman -- making the Joker a bit more visionary and oddly saner than Batman himself). As the Joker points out: He's not mad, just ahead of the curve. :)
The IMAX-friendly flight over Hong Kong at night behind Batman is something I look forward to experiencing a couple of more times this summer.
That's about all I'm going to say for now, except this: Easily one of the best movies of the past 10 years, definitely on my Top 25 of All Time list already. The bat signal is in the sky, calling you. Go! Go now! Oh, and then come back and check out www.maxquickseries.com. :) <-- (Joker Smiley)
